Before you embark on a career working Architect Jobs, check out this article for some background information on the field. Did you know that the term “architect” goes all the way back to Greek times, when a “chief” was arkhi and a “builder” was a tekton? Put them together and theres the word origin! An architect is a “chief builder”.
Jobs in architecture vary wildly, as working architects fill a variety of roles. Of course, architects design buildings, but they usually oversee the planning and actual construction of the structure, as well. An architects main task is to bring a clients vision to life from initial planning and conceptual stages, all the way through final construction of the physical structure itself.
Many professional fields require license- teaching, the practice of law or medicine and so on, and architecture, since it affects the publics health and safety directly, requires a license as well. The requirements for a license vary based on an architects chosen field and location, as each of the 50 states has different licensing requirements. There is a federal regulatory body- the NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) that tries to ensure parity in licensing requirements between states. The NCARB also administrates the ALE (Architect Licensing Exam), the passing of which is one of the 3 basic requirements for licensure- the other two are at least a BA level of education and an intensive internship/apprenticeship. Then, youll be ready for Architecture Jobs!
During their training, architects learn all about various building codes and also attain an understanding of industrial building materials and methods, both so they can consider design and cost and project management aspects of their projects. They generally will work on commission, from clients ranging from private citizens to a corporation, to the government. Its a long day, too- jobs run at all times and on tight deadlines, and an architect usually leads a team of professionals such as engineers- so “calling in” to work isnt really an option. The architect is there at the site to make sure the building is finished on time and on budget. Usually, in the initial phases of a project the architects role can be fulfilled from an office, though towards the end of a project they will make multiple visits to the job site, especially if its a landscape architecture project.
An architect makes comparable money to an engineer- according to the US Department of Labors Occupational Outlook Handbook; the median salary is about $63,000 per year. As with most professions, interns at Architect Jobs make substantially less, and salaries tend to grow as the architect gains experience.
The need for architects to work landscape architect jobs, even in todays economy, continues to grow.
